The Afrofinn Fashion Show was an exceptional experience! Agar Mamer and Winnie Ismail had already laid the groundwork when I joined the team.
The journey was remarkable, especially since all our interactions were virtual, connecting from different locations.
We quickly assembled a group of models, many of whom were first-timers. By the end, we had a mix of experienced models as well.
We showcased designs from four different designers: Remix Gear, Fjoy Couture, Soft Kap, and Afrocheck. Each brought their unique style and vision to the show.
This was my second time organizing a fashion show, the first being at Helsingin Kaupungin Museo in April 2023. The Afrofinn Fashion Show is particularly significant to me because it highlights fashion and culture from diverse backgrounds. The vibrant and joyful musical culture of Africa has always resonated with me, even from my childhood.
Unlike the museum show, this event was outdoors, presenting unique challenges, particularly with changing rooms and makeup in an outdoor setting. Despite not having a week of training before the show, we approached it with a positive mindset and improvisation.
Organizing a fashion show involves numerous considerations: clothes, sizes, model assignments, walking order, and each designer's music preferences.
Models need confidence, good posture, and sure steps. They must engage the audience without being distracted, know how to pose at corners, and ensure the fashion stands out.
Photographing and posing require practice. Some have a natural talent, but most need to refine these skills.
Personally, I have modeled twice at Helsinki Fashion Week and in several Afrofinnish shows. Despite starting later in life, I pursued my passion through Fashion Model School in 2019. It's never too late to follow your dreams.
Experiences like these strengthen you. I recall the makeup artists' surprise at my first catwalk at HFW, where most models were much younger.
The world of fashion, modeling, and photography is my passion. I aim to help people enhance their lives both mentally and professionally.
To further benefit the Afrofinns association, I believe organizing workshops and fashion classes could be immensely valuable. These sessions could cover runway techniques, styling, and the business side of fashion, thereby nurturing local talent and promoting cultural exchange. If you're interested in participating or supporting these initiatives, please drop us a message. Together, we can create opportunities for growth and empowerment in our community.
Thank you to Afrofinns Ry, Elvis, Agar, Winnie, and all the models and designers Sofy, Richard, Jemena, and Omolora.
Looking forward to the next show!
Fashion is my passion. ❤️
